the legend

Two herons. One bird.

An old grey bird that stands at the water's edge and will not stir the water. An older one whose single cry gave the formless waters their first name. Read to the end and you will know why an instrument for reading models carries a feather.

the two herons

The watcher, and the first namer

Ardea · the watcher in the shallows

The grey heron stands at the water's edge for as long as it takes, and does not stir the water — stirring blinds it. It reads the surface and what moves beneath, knows one fish from another, and strikes once, precisely, only when it has seen the true shape clearly. When it cannot see, it does not strike. It waits — nothing wasted, nothing guessed.

The naturalists gave the whole genus its name: Ardea, the heron. Say it aloud and the ear catches a second word — ardor. Not heat: the keen, steady, unblinking attention; the patience that burns without moving.

the Bennu · the first namer

Before there was land, a great heron alighted on the first stone to rise above the formless waters — and gave the first cry. That cry did not change the water. It named it — gave the formless a first true form you could navigate by.

Tell that part honestly: the Bennu is a creation figure, and Ardora is not. What it keeps from the older heron is the naming alone — and a name is given only for the shape it actually saw. The rest stays in shadow, and is marked as shadow.

Stand still. Read what is truly there. Give it its true name — or say nothing, and let the blank stand as honestly as the name would have. The murky waters, made navigable — thousands of open models, read one at a time and set down as legible field-notes.

the quill that writes a true field-note

The heron's own feather is the instrument of the read — not a weapon and not a shield, but a reader: the thing that turns patient watching into a legible, written record. Where other houses carry an eye that watches or a grip that holds, Ardora carries the feather that reads and names.

Old stories end up in the keeping of a house. The ending of the name is the house's own — the same turn that once made Vulcora out of Vulcan made Ardora out of Ardea.

how to read the roster

The grammar the feather writes in

The heron sets each model down in a small, fixed grammar — a class, its Silhouette, a Build Story, a family colour. Learn it once here, on real field-notes, and the whole atlas reads at a glance.

the class

Every specimen wears a disposition class — what kind of thing it is, never how good. An identity, not a rank.

Base

a base model — the raw pretrained kit a whole family is built on.

Assistant

post-trained to take the helpful turn — instruct, chat, aligned.

Code specialist

tilted toward one domain — code, mathematics — by continued training.

Reasoner

leans on visible, step-by-step scaffolding before it answers.

Persona

tuned to hold a voice or a character — roleplay, story.

Distilled

trained to echo a larger model's behaviour in a smaller frame.

Unbound

reads as having its refusals loosened — a disposition, never a safety verdict (that is Protora’s question).

the stat shape

The Silhouette's thumbnail — seven little columns, one per published axis. Taller is a more pronounced coarse band (minimal → dominant). A dim is an honest blank — a trait the heron would not name.

the score

One coarse band over the whole reading — how pronounced and clearly-read its character is. Descriptive of character, never a quality or safety score.

the build story

How a build moved off its champion: a band lifted, a band eased, held. Only what actually moved is called out; the rest of the line holds.

This build lifts Reasoning Scaffolding · eases Domain Specialization; the rest of the line holds.

The colour is the family. All Qwen share one hue, all Gemma another — so kin read as kin at a glance.

the words we use — the names Ardora owns, on DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B

A field guide owns the names of its birds. These are the ones Ardora coined for what it shows you — most of them things nobody had named before, each taught on one real specimen so the whole vocabulary reads as one field-note.

the Silhouette

The seven-axis identity radar — a model's disposition, drawn. Nobody has ever seen a model's identity graphed before; this artifact carries Ardora's name for it.

the Character

The coarse public character type, from Ardora's own fixed vocabulary — the Sage, the Maverick, the Fledgling. An identity, never a rank; an unclear read abstains rather than force one.

the ReadSeal

The stamp of the ritual. A completed read is sealed ARDORA READ with its date; a specimen still awaiting one carries the honest pre-state. It states a completed process — never quality or safety, and never a faked seal.

reasoning correctness / capability — whether the reasoning is correct or the student is 'better at math' is a capability question the reading does not answer

That is the whole alphabet — you can now say what a model is in one breath: that's its Silhouette; it reads as the Sage; Ardora Read on the 5th. Every entry in the atlas is written in it — open the roster and read one.
